Retrieving Problems

vivslaFBRegardless of breed, all bird dogs should retrieve to hand. Why? It saves game and time; both essential assets in the field. But most importantly, it protects your most precious "asset": your canine companion. There are many reasons why a bird dog may not retrieve and most are human caused. Yes, we can be our own worst enemy! I have studied and worked with various methods to alleviate most of the problems.

A Quality Retrieve

A good retrieve consists of related sequences. The dog should be steady to wing, shot and fall until the release command. This can be as simple as “Fetch”. If you hunt more than one dog at a time, as I do, the dog’s name should be the command. Then he must make a speedy course to the bird and directly back to you. The final element is a release command with the dog placing the bird in your hand. When you visit us, I would be happy to demonstrate these elements of a proper retrieve with one of our trained dogs
